The English Department at the University of Münster, Germany, invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Position in Book Studies (Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in),(salary level TV-L E13, 100%). Applications should be sent before 08. May 2020.

This fixed-term position will start on 1 September 2020 or later and is available for three years. Currently, the regular working time for full (100%) employment is 39 hours and 50 minutes per week.

The Chair of Book Studies at WWU Münster specializes in research questions in book history and publishing studies with a particular focus on the Anglophone world. We base our research and teaching activities on a broad understanding of book studies, which comprises printed and digital text forms and focuses on the various contexts of book production, distribution and reception (i.e. the cultural, social, economic, political and legal dimensions).

Scope of duties

  • Academic research and preparation of a monograph (as a "Habilitation" project, where appropriate) on a topic dealing with Anglophone book studies (broadly understood, but preferably focused on the twentieth or twenty-first century)
  • participation in the conception, organization and realization of international conferences and workshops of the chair, and
  • teaching in the field of Anglophone book studies (4 weekly contact hours per semester, language of instruction: English)

The prerequisite for employment is an above-average doctorate in literature, cultural studies or book studies with a focus on book history, publishing studies or material culture. Candidates should have completed their PhD by their starting date.

  • Beyond this, the following are expected
    experience teaching in higher education with English as the classroom language
  • proven interest in research discourses about book studies, especially relating to Anglophone contexts, and
  • communication and cooperation skills appropriate to working in a small project team (German language skills are desirable but not a prerequisite)
